"Your Pet's Best Friend ..... Next To You, Of Course"
Wellness Care & Preventative Healthcare
The best way to provide a long, healthy, happy, and active life for your pet is through wellness care and preventative healthcare.  Routine wellness examinations and diagnostic testing will establish a baseline for your pet's health which will enable you and our doctors to better understand your pet's physical well-being.  In addition to this, these routine check-ups are the best way to diagnose and prevent illness and disease at an early stage.
Wellness Treatments:
  • Comprehensive Physical Examination (recommended at least once a year).
  • Preventative Healthcare Tests as outlined below on this page.
  • Vaccinations - those appropriate for your pet's lifestyle.
  • Flea and Parasite Preventatives - we will help you select the best product for your pet.
  • Nail Trims.
  • Anal Gland Expression.
  • Dental Cleanings.
Recommended Preventative Healthcare Tests:
  • Intestinal Parasite Exams (A test of fecal material).
    • Recommended each year.
  • Heartworm 4DX Test (A blood test screening test for Heartworm Disease, and 3 tick transmitted infections: Lyme, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma)
    • Recommended each year for dogs (not necessary for cats).
  • Health Screen Blood Profile (A blood test evaluating your pet's liver, kidneys, blood sugar, electrolytes, blood proteins, and Complete Blood Count to screen for infections or anemia).
    • Recommended each year.
  • Urinalysis (A test of urine looking for urinary tract infection, diseases affecting the kidneys, urinary crystals and stones).
    • Recommended each year.
  • ECG or EKG - also known as Electrocardiogram (A simple test looking for signs of heart disease).
    • Recommended at 6 years of age and each year thereafter.
**** All of these test can be performed through a simple blood test, collection of a urine sample and a fecal sample, and an easy and quick look at your pet's heart performed in our clinic and evaluated by a Cardiologist.

Vaccines:
In line with our goal of low-stress wellness care, Rancho San Carlos Pet Clinic only carries high-quality vaccines with minimal additives (no thimerosal) and small volumes. A smaller volume means less discomfort for your pet following an injection. We carry adjuvant-free Rabies vaccines for cats which greatly reduces vaccine reactions.  We also provide the Bordetella vaccine to dogs by mouth so no injection is needed. Vaccines are given based on lifestyle and risk assessment and are decided based on your pet's unique lifestyle.
Titers: In some cases, vaccination is not always appropriate, or we need more information to make our risk assessment.  For some pets, vaccine titers may be more appropriate. A titer is a blood test to check your pets antibody level against disease.
